A lower car payment or a simpler debt payment could create room for the holidays and help your budget long after the leftovers are gone.
Thanksgiving has a way of filling more than the calendar. A bigger grocery trip. A flight to see family. Extra gas, an overnight stay, or a few more people around the table. Those expenses arrive alongside the car payment, credit card bills, and everything else your paycheck already covers.
This year, some of those costs are climbing. Grocery prices rose 1.8% over the 12 months ending September 2026, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Within that total, fruits and vegetables increased 3.7%, nonalcoholic beverages rose 3.8%, and cereals and bakery products were up 2.1%. Those figures measure grocery categories, rather than a complete Thanksgiving dinner, but they help explain the pressure at checkout.
Getting to the table may bring a bigger increase. Hopper’s estimates, reported by The Washington Post in October, put average domestic round-trip Thanksgiving airfare at $402, up 31% from last year. At that average, four tickets would cost $1,608 before baggage charges or other extras. Your fare will depend on where and when you fly.
When those expenses start adding up, it’s natural to ask, “How are we going to cover this?” There’s another question worth asking first:
Could changing what we’re already paying make this easier?
Your car payment may deserve another look
If you financed your vehicle through a dealership or another lender, you may have accepted the financing that worked at the time and moved on. Since then, your credit, income, or available borrowing options may have changed.
An auto refinance replaces your current vehicle loan with a new one. If you qualify for a lower rate, it could reduce your payment and the interest you pay. A different repayment period may also lower the monthly payment.
The distinction matters. Extending a loan can create breathing room each month while increasing the total interest paid. That’s why a useful refinance conversation should compare the rate, fees, remaining repayment period, and total cost together.
At Alcon Employees FCU, we can look at those details with you. The question is whether a change makes your situation better, both now and down the road.
Several payments may be creating one bigger problem
Sometimes the pressure comes from keeping up with several balances at once. Each has its own interest rate, minimum payment, and due date. You’re making the payments, but there’s little room left afterward.
Debt consolidation may offer a way to combine eligible debts into one loan with one monthly payment. Depending on the rate and repayment period, that payment could be lower than the payments you’re making now. A lower interest rate may also reduce your borrowing costs.
But consolidation needs to solve more than the calendar. Fees and a longer repayment period can affect the total cost. And paying off credit cards with a consolidation loan only helps if those balances don’t build back up.
We’ll help you compare what you owe today with what a new arrangement would actually mean. Sometimes simplifying those obligations can help well beyond November.
A holiday loan may still be the right fit
Perhaps your existing payments are already reasonable. You have a specific expense to cover and enough room in your budget to repay it over time.
In that situation, a holiday loan may make sense. A defined repayment schedule can help you plan for the cost instead of leaving a balance to linger.
Start with the amount you need and a payment you can comfortably manage after the holiday. Then compare the rate, fees, and total repayment amount with your other options. The goal is to cover a manageable need without creating a harder January.
